In the 6th class Philosophy lessons, the subject of decision-making is being discussed. Do we make decisions that only affect ourselves or do we consider the larger community. A practical example of this is atmosphere that is generated in a classroom by simple decisions to follow the class rules rather than doing our own thing, or to listen to others rather than talk to someone else while someone is speaking. These small decisions collectively create the environment we learn in and often make an impact on parents who come to see the school for the first time.

Sadly, our Registrar, Mrs Catherine Coffey, will relocate with her family to the UK in October. Mrs Coffey has been the welcoming hand that many of our families have first encountered, the supportive guide during enrolment, and a central figure in many of our events and celebrations that occur throughout the year. She will be greatly missed, and we wish her and her family all the best for the future.
Joining us on the 19th of September in the role of Registrar is Mrs Claire Hickson. Mrs Hickson brings both experience as a Registrar as well as responsibilities across school management and community engagement. She is looking forward to welcoming our new students and families for 2025, and beyond. We know that you will make her feel welcome at John Colet School.

This week we were delighted to hear the news that a group artwork by Year 4 students was selected as one of the 100 finalists from over 5,000 entries in the Wild at Art Threatened Species Art Competition.
The organisers said: “Your class’s skills and dedication have truly shone through, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them as part of the finalist group. Their artwork not only showcases their artistic skills but also highlights their commitment to raising awareness about the conservation of Australia’s unique threatened species.”

Deputy Head of School’s Comment
This week we have enjoyed three wonderful sporting events at John Colet. Last Sunday 110 people from joined in the Beach2Beach fun run. This has been the biggest team to date. On Monday we had a fantastic day at our annual Athletics Carnival. There were many parents who joined in the for the day. Finally on Wednesday we had 32 of our primary students representing John Colet at the IPSHA sports carnival. All these events generated a strong community atmosphere so important for the well being of our school. A special thank you to Mrs Davey for her tireless efforts in organising these opportunities for our students to shine.

A big week in Athletics
We had another fantastic turnout for the Beach2Beach Fun Run this year, with our JCS Team having 110 participants, making us the second-largest team after Stella Maris College! The weather was glorious, and everyone enjoyed the event, whether they chose to walk or run the 3k, 6k, or 13k distance. It was a wonderful day of fun and community spirit! A big thank you to parents James D and Maraya B for volunteering and helping out at the stand.
We had an amazing day at the Athletics Carnival the following day at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Rec! The sun was shining, and there was a gentle breeze, making it the perfect day for some fantastic sporting fun. Our students gave it their all in the track and field events, showing incredible dedication and sportsmanship.
A highlight of the day was the parent races, where our wonderful parents showcased their athletic

This week in 4N
In English this week we reviewed last week’s descriptions of setting and edited them. We continued reading Storm Boy and discussed vocabulary. Next week we will look at Characterisation and how writers invite emotional engagement with literature. In Maths we reviewed 2D shapes and their properties before investigating tessellations. We also looked at how we can use shapes together to make different ones. Next week we will look at the transformation of shapes (translation, rotation, reflection) and tessellations. We continued our Geography unit by discussing the meaning of sustainability and reading about cities around the world that are reducing the use of cars. In Science, we consolidated our understanding of natural and processed materials. As part of our unit on World Faiths, we began looking at the Golden Rule – a common thread expressed in different ways in all religions.

From the Head of School
We look forward to bringing our community together for our Athletics Carnival on Monday. Conditions will be different this year due to some renovations being undertaken by the Sports Academy, however, it is sure to be a fun day. We also hope to see as many mums and dads as last year in our parent race. Don’t forget to bring your running shoes and have a stretch before!
