Deputy Head’s Comment

Today 6th class are having their “Fun Day”, one of the many “lasts” for them as we move towards the end of term. This week they had their last Philosophy lesson at John Colet. They had an exercise where they had to pick a classmate’s name out of a hat and reflect on the very best about that person and write down their reflections.  They were also instructed not to write anything that they did not mean. They did not put their names to their words. These were then collected and handed out for other students to read aloud to the rest of the class. This was a beautiful exercise, and every child rose to the occasion. It was so uplifting to hear them speak so well of each other.
6th class have been outstanding in their service over the last few weeks with all the events that have been running

Head of School’s Comment

Thank you to our Parents and Friends Association for organising a memorable Diwali Celebration last weekend. Months of behind-the-scenes preparation went into making this event a success, creating a wonderful opportunity for our families to come together and welcome friends and extended family from the wider community.
John Colet School is truly strengthened by the dedication and service of our community. Whether you have served as a Class Parent, attended an excursion, helped at events, read with our Lower 1st students, or simply offered your time when the need arose—thank you. As we reflect on 2024, many of our school’s highlights would not have been possible without your invaluable support.”In serving the best interests of children, we serve the best interests of all humanity.” — Gough Whitlam.

The legacy of Shakespearean theatre at John Colet

The students of John Colet immerse in Shakespeare’s work every year, from Kindergarten to Year 6, learning many aspects of stagecraft in the process. As our sixth-class leavers prepare to embark on the next stage of their educational journey, it is apt to reflect on the legacy of their theatrical experiences, to consider “which grain will grow, and which will not” of those seeds that were planted during their seven years at the school.
Let us examine first the revelations in performance. What becomes immediately apparent on stage is the high level of confidence, exuding from not only the naturally extroverted students, but from every single child. One remarks the absence of self-doubt: no-one stutters in the flow of dialogue; no-one suffers the agonies of stage fright; no-one freezes on or offstage. It is a given that everyone will meet the demands of public display. Where many adults might stumble or

Our Primary Shakespeare Festival has been a tremendous success this week, and we are especially excited for tonight’s performance from our 6th Class students. Many of these students have played a wide range of roles since Lower 1st, experiencing over 20 plays each year as both performers and audience members. To the best of my knowledge, John Colet is the only school on the planet to offer such a comprehensive Shakespeare program! After speaking with our graduating students, it’s inspiring to hear how many are eager to continue exploring drama in the future.
Bringing these performances together is no small feat and would not be possible without the dedication of so many. First, a heartfelt thank you to our teachers and support staff, who have been preparing, practicing, and refining these plays throughout the year. A special thank you to Ms. Lilla for her direction, and to Glen Street Theatre for

Shakespeare continues at John Colet with the Lower 1st performances booked for Week 5. In years gone by Lower 1st performed their plays earlier in the year, however moving them to Term 4 allows for the children to mature and have the opportunity to see the older children performing  before they themselves take to the stage. Today for the first time Lower 1st were taken down to Glen St Theatre to watch their buddies doing their final rehearsal before they perform this evening. This was a nice touch for both Lower 1st and 6th class.

This term, we are focusing on the Value of Truthfulness.
Every few weeks, we will delve into different aspects of this value, guided by simple yet meaningful questions from our Vision, Mission, and Values Statement. These questions will help us reflect on and practice truthfulness:
Truthfulness Practice:
•     Is it true?
•     Is it kind, pleasant, and beneficial?
•     Is it uplifting?
•     What would a wise person say or do?
During our Staff Development Day on Monday, we began discussions on what truthfulness means for both staff and students. Throughout the term, we will continue to explore these questions in weekly assemblies and classroom discussions, considering how we can apply them in our daily lives.

From our Deputy Head of School

On Tuesday night there was an Information Evening for our 2025 Lower 1st parents. This is our first opportunity to welcome new families into the John Colet community. The event is a good reminder of the rich and full program that our Lower 1st children have each year. This is very evident in our current Lower 1st who have taken huge steps forward and are currently preparing for their Shakespeare production to be held in Week 5 of this term. Next Thursday we will welcome the 2025 Lower1st children to school for their Orientation Morning. Our 5th class students are waiting in anticipation to be very much involved in helping on that day.

4th Class at the end of Term 4. busy as ever!

This week, the project presentations showcased the children’s research and creativity with regards to plastic pollution, and brought our Science and Geography units of work to an end. In English, using the text Storm Boy, the children presented arguments to an imaginary council meeting as to why the vandals, who destroyed the birds’ habitat in the sanctuary, should be charged with trespassing. This activity was used as a springboard to revise persuasive texts and the children typed a persuasive letter about why birds should be better protected. We looked at the acronym A FOREST to remind us of the variety of persuasive devices that we should be using in our writing (Alliteration, Facts, Opinions, Repetition/Rhetorical questions, Emotive language, Statistics and rule of Three). In Maths we combined our length and multiplication skills by measuring our height and calculating how high we would go if we were able to jump multiples
