On Wednesday, 27 August, 16 students from 3rd and 4th Class proudly represented our school at the IPSHA Athletics Carnival, held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. After weeks of rain, we were blessed with some sunshine, which made the day even more special for our young athletes. It was a wonderful day of competition, friendship, and personal bests.
Our students joined 1,730 athletes from 56 Independent schools across NSW, with a staggering 2,927 event entries throughout the carnival. Against such a strong field, our children gave their very best, displaying courage, determination, and excellent sportsmanship. Highlights of the day included the sprint events, where the cheering was electric, and the middle-distance races, which showcased resilience and endurance. Every competitor brought enthusiasm and heart to the track, making us proud with their efforts and positive spirit.
We are especially delighted by the way our students encouraged one another and celebrated each

The week in Second Class
What have we learnt this week?
English- We have learning about Persuasive Writing. In pairs and groups students discuss a topic given to them and come up with whether they agree or disagree with the statement
and come up with reasons for both. They then complete a persuasive writing piece. They also completed explicit spelling lessons learning about homophones, revised some
irregular words, tenses – past, present and future. We explored the ‘ch’ sound using the phoneme /k/ in the beginning, middle and the end of words. The children also completed
comprehension, grammar and handwriting lessons. We are so impressed by the speeches so far and look forward to more next week.
Mathematics – This week the children focused on Subtraction. We looked at a variety of strategies such as counting on the find the difference, counting back, jump strategy and
compensation. The children finished off the week with multi-step problem-solving questions and multiplication fluency practice

Head of School’s Comment
John Colet School had a fabulous turnout of 124 entries for the annual Beach2Beach fun run on Sunday. Thank you to all our families who gave their support on the day, and a special thanks to Mrs Davey for championing this community event.
Our 5th and 6th Class students return from their Bathurst camp today, perhaps not with pockets full of gold, but certainly with a greater appreciation of the historical significance of the region. They have had the opportunity to connect with the courage, resilience, and determination that defined those early settlers. Experiencing the story in person – rather than just reading about it – offers a unique chance to truly empathise with the challenges and bravery of the past.
“Gold is where you find it.”
– Australian goldfields proverb

Huge turnout at the Beach2Beach fun run
Congratulations to all the families who took part in the Beach2Beach fun run last weekend. We had 124 members in the John Colet School team, making us, once again, the second largest team entered! Everyone enjoyed the lovely fine morning and the picnic lunch at the finish line. Thank you to Rotary and the other organisers and sponsors for another terrific event.

Incursion with illustrator
Award-winning illustrator and Bundjalung woman, Charmaine Ledden-Lewis, presented to Primary and Infants classes about her craft, and also taught an intensive and fun drawing workshop with 4th Class students recently. With a large soft toy turtle as the subject, she encouraged the children to see objects as shapes first, to get the form down on paper, then add details and shading.
Ms Ledden-Lewis lives on Dharug and Gundungurra Country in the Blue Mountains, and has illustrated many books about Country and First Nations experiences and perspectives, including Born to Run with Cathy Freeman. John Colet School is lucky to have many copies of her books in our library.

An update from 3rd Class
In English this week 3C read The Peasant Prince several times and learned the meaning of ‘genre’. We discussed the way this autobiographical book also includes elements of narrative to frame Li Cunxin’s life story and that this makes it a ‘hybrid’ text. We began learning vocabulary words, and the children identified similarities and differences between their lives and Li’s. In Maths we explored prisms and compared them to pyramids, developing a strong understanding of their properties. In Science, we investigated which material is the best conductor of heat – plastic, wood or metal – and learned how to make a fair test by only changing one element of the experiment. In Geography, we learned about atlases and identified places in Australia using grid coordinates. We also practised mapping skills by developing a simple key for the places that we identified.
The children were very excited to learn how to send
