Head of School’s Comment
John Colet School had a fabulous turnout of 124 entries for the annual Beach2Beach fun run on Sunday. Thank you to all our families who gave their support on the day, and a special thanks to Mrs Davey for championing this community event.
Our 5th and 6th Class students return from their Bathurst camp today, perhaps not with pockets full of gold, but certainly with a greater appreciation of the historical significance of the region. They have had the opportunity to connect with the courage, resilience, and determination that defined those early settlers. Experiencing the story in person – rather than just reading about it – offers a unique chance to truly empathise with the challenges and bravery of the past.

Huge turnout at the Beach2Beach fun run
Congratulations to all the families who took part in the Beach2Beach fun run last weekend. We had 124 members in the John Colet School team, making us, once again, the second largest team entered! Everyone enjoyed the lovely fine morning and the picnic lunch at the finish line. Thank you to Rotary and the other organisers and sponsors for another terrific event.

Chess Semi-Finals update
Recently, five students from 5th and 6th Class attended the Inter-school Chess Semi-Finals. Although this year they did not receive a place in the finals, the children demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and resilience throughout.
Congratulations Jeremy M, Ian G, Arthur L, Huxley G and Aayansh K.

Incursion with illustrator
Award-winning illustrator and Bundjalung woman, Charmaine Ledden-Lewis, presented to Primary and Infants classes about her craft, and also taught an intensive and fun drawing workshop with 4th Class students recently. With a large soft toy turtle as the subject, she encouraged the children to see objects as shapes first, to get the form down on paper, then add details and shading.
Ms Ledden-Lewis lives on Dharug and Gundungurra Country in the Blue Mountains, and has illustrated many books about Country and First Nations experiences and perspectives, including Born to Run with Cathy Freeman. John Colet School is lucky to have many copies of her books in our library.

An update from 3rd Class
In English this week 3C read The Peasant Prince several times and learned the meaning of ‘genre’. We discussed the way this autobiographical book also includes elements of narrative to frame Li Cunxin’s life story and that this makes it a ‘hybrid’ text. We began learning vocabulary words, and the children identified similarities and differences between their lives and Li’s. In Maths we explored prisms and compared them to pyramids, developing a strong understanding of their properties. In Science, we investigated which material is the best conductor of heat – plastic, wood or metal – and learned how to make a fair test by only changing one element of the experiment. In Geography, we learned about atlases and identified places in Australia using grid coordinates. We also practised mapping skills by developing a simple key for the places that we identified.
The children were very excited to learn how to send

Head of School’s Comment
This term, we continue to explore our school value of Courage. At present, we are undertaking perhaps the greatest work of all – the work on ourselves. This is why we reflect on our school values and seek practical exercises that support this inner development. A wonderful place to begin is by becoming still and asking ourselves: “Why do I feel the way I do?” Whether the feeling is pleasant or difficult, understanding its source helps us step back from the emotion and see it more clearly. This kind of honest reflection is our most powerful tool against old habits that no longer serve us.
“The unexamined life is not worth living. Know thyself – for this is the beginning of all wisdom. When we understand ourselves, we gain the courage to change what needs changing.” – Socrates

Book Week in 2nd Class
English- This week we have started learning about Persuasive Writing. In pairs and groups students discuss a topic given to them and come up with whether they agree or disagree with the statement and come up with reasons for both. They then complete a persuasive writing piece. They also completed explicit spelling lessons learning about homophones, revised some irregular words, Antonyms and Synonyms, we revised the floss rule and looked at doubling consonants in the middle of words. The children also completed comprehension, grammar and handwriting lessons. We look forward to speeches next week for The Public Speaking Competition.
Mathematics – This week the children focused on Addition. We looked at number facts, adding with doubles, bridging to 10, addition on the number line and adding in any order. The children finished off the week with problem-solving questions and multiplication fluency practice where they consolidated their knowledge of multiples of 5’s and
