Deputy Head of School’s Comment

Today all our Lower 1st celebrated their first 100 days at school. They all looked very old dressed in their twin sets and vests and sporting canes. It has been a day full of fun activities such as how many words can you write in 100 seconds, how many sit-ups can you do in 100 seconds and much more. They also enjoyed a very sumptuous morning provided by parents. The children have come a long way in such a short time.  The extraordinary growth that takes place both academically and emotionally in the first year of schooling cannot be overstated. They are proving to be a very happy, steady and collegiate group.

Our school community came together on Monday to celebrate Teacher’s Day. Each child thoughtfully prepared a piece of writing about someone who has made—or continues to make—a meaningful impact in their life. One student from each class was selected to share their reflections at assembly, and it was truly moving to hear such a diverse and heartfelt range of stories.
Teachers come in many forms: they might be in your classroom, part of your family, a friend, or someone in the wider community who inspires you. What defines a great teacher is not just their knowledge, but the way they help us see the world differently.
To discover great teachers in life, we must first be open to learning and attuned to ourselves and our surroundings. This spirit of awareness and openness is a cornerstone of our approach at JCS, nurturing children to become lifelong learners—well beyond the school gates.

On Monday we will celebrate Teacher’s Day. This is an opportunity for the children to acknowledge all that a teacher provides. Throughout life every human is dependent on teachers, and we can all reflect on the impact different teachers have made in our lives. The idea of bringing a flower is to represent a gift of gratitude for all that has been received. This year we will use a candle on the main table to represent light and knowledge. It is always a beautiful event full of love and respect.

Head of School’s Comment

This term, our value in focus is Courage—and we’ve begun our exploration by drawing on the thoughtful insights shared by students during our recent assemblies.
When asked what courage meant to them, our students offered broad and heartfelt responses:

The courage to do something even when you feel afraid
The courage to try your best
The courage to admit a mistake
The courage to stand up for a friend

However, it was this student’s reflection that will shape our discussions moving forward:

The courage to stay true to your beliefs, and also the courage to listen and maybe change them.

It’s a complex space to navigate, for both children and adults. It challenges us to be both strong and receptive, principled and humble. Over the coming weeks, we look forward to unpacking this further across classes, in discussion, in stillness, and through our daily practices.
“When in doubt, pause. When in certainty, pause. Courage lives in the space between

Deputy Head of School’s Comment

For the last few weeks, the children have been competing in friendly Basketball matches with the German International School. This is not just an opportunity for the children to play a friendly game and to improve skills, but it is also a good way to build community, which has been very successful. Over the last two years, the wider variety of sport opportunities offered has really raised the profile of sport overall in the school. Another example is the AFL clinic today which will prepare us for our first junior AFL team to be registered for PISA sport next term. This provides a wonderful balance with our extensive offering of creative arts.

Head of School’s comment

We place great value on teaching our students the skills of attention and focus. These qualities are cultivated through our long-standing practice of the Pause, which has been a part of our approach for 40 years now, along with the daily classroom experiences and enriched by our teaching of classical languages, choir, a specialist art program, and chess.
One of the most powerful expressions of this focus is our Shakespeare program. It is truly inspiring to watch our students move from simple line readings to deeply inhabiting their characters—giving their all, with presence and authenticity.
Next week, we are excited to present our annual Infants Shakespeare Festival. The plays encourage a commitment to your part, a lesson that is valuable both on and off the stage.
