Exploring Shapes in Maths and Space in Science

In Maths this week, 3S were learning to identify and describe the features of a range of 2D shapes using correct classifications such as whether the shapes are polygons, quadrilaterals, parallelograms and so on. On geoboards they made a variety of regular and irregular 2D shapes including isosceles, scalene and equilateral triangles.

Deputy Head of School Comment

We have arrived at the end of the term in what seems to have been a very short time. Everyone will be able to take a well-deserved break and parents will be able to have the children home….again! During both Assemblies this week we discussed the idea of widening our circle of compassion based on the weekly reading, this week from Albert Einstein. We discussed the idea of service and being aware of the needs of those around us. This also ties in with the prayer we have been saying together which starts with the statement “May all be happy”. The children have been asked to consider what part they can play to make this a reality. We look forward to finding out how they have fared after the holidays.

Head of School’s Comment

This holiday we launch our new website www.johncolet.nsw.edu.au   I am sure you will agree that the improvements really capture the unique education we provide.  You can also keep in touch with JCS through our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/JohnColetSchool , and by following us on Instagram  https://www.instagram.com/johncoletschool/
Once again, I would like to thank our community for your support this Term. It has been challenging for everyone and we are by no means past the effect of this global virus, however I am confident that together we will continue to ensure that all our students continue to flourish. We are thankful that we have not lost one family due to the financial crisis and we look forward to potentially holding more community events again later in the year.
We wish you are safe and enjoyable holiday.

Registrar’s Comment

It has been an extremely busy few weeks with many enquiries, tours, new applications, Trial Days and the enrolment of new students.  This is wonderful news considering the trying times we have been experiencing and may continue to experience for some time.
New students
This week we welcomed Huxley G to Lower 1st with Mrs Cooper.  In Term 3 we will welcome Ethan H to U1st with Miss Bower, and Rachel H and Oscar D to 2M with Mrs McDermott.
Lower 1st – 2021
We are on wait list for boys for our Lower 1st intake next year.  We do have a few places still available for girls.  I do hope all families with siblings for next year have applied.  If you haven’t, please contact me immediately. It is always our goal to offer places to our current families, but we do need to know you have a sibling so we can include them

From our P&F – Welcome Back

Hi families,
Welcome back to school. I hope that you are staying safe and well. What challenging times we’ve seen these past few months. I feel so incredibly grateful for this lovely community of families at JCS that have supported me and my family and especially grateful to the teachers and staff that have worked so hard to support our children.  I’m sure that you all feel the same.
To express our gratitude and P&F will cater a lunch for the teachers and staff on the pupil free day in Term 3 (it’s the first Monday of Term 3). In addition we intend to create a video with thank and gratitude from parents and pupils which we will edit together to screen at the lunch. To help with this if you have any video editing skills and willingness to do help please can you get in touch with Tanya (thyams.young@gmail.com). In expectation of

How to get very young children interested in art

Art teacher, mother and grandmother Annette Gadsby shares tips and links for bringing out the artist in very young children, and explains why ‘visual literacy’ is so important

Our 4-year-old grandson’s favourite artwork is a copy of a Fra Angelico painting. I’m not sure whether it’s the gold leaf or the image and colours that attract him, but when you ask him what his favourite painting in our lounge room is, he carefully looks around and chooses that one.
At John Colet we display roughly 20 reproductions from medieval art to Contemporary and ask the child to choose one. The very young are asked. “What can you see”? and “Why did you choose that picture”?  They always take a long time to choose, often carefully examining each artwork before they make their choice. It is interesting to see what they choose as it tells us something about them.
