At this time of year, we are looking forward to all the end of year activities such as the 6th class stalls, Picnic Day, 6th class farewell lunch, excursions and Lower 1st Shakespeare. It is important that these events are enjoyable for everyone and to that end we keep working on the School Value of Respect. The children spend the term considering this value from many different perspectives, but the real test comes when they have to put it into practice. Respect has been very evident in our primary performances this week in the way the children have performed both on and off stage.

Our first two nights of our Primary Shakespeare Festival have been a great success.
Tonight, we look forward to our final two plays, from this year’s graduating 6th Class. This evening they shall perform Julius Caesar and The Taming of the Shrew. It seems a short time ago that many of these students had their first experience of Shakespeare in Lower 1st, with The Merry Wives of Windsor. Since then they were joined by a wider cast, performing Henry V and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 3rd Class. In 2021, COVID and the subsequent lockdown didn’t stop them as we moved the productions to Zoom, before returning to Glen Street for their 5th Class plays of Hamlet and As You Like It.
The lessons on the human condition that these students have experienced and empathised with, are sure to serve them well as they manage the ups and downs of their next

This term we have been considering the School Value of Respect. In Assembly we considered a reading from Desmond Tutu which speaks about the interdependence we have on each other to learn about being human. Both the Primary and the Infants children responded beautifully to the reading and were able to stand and articulate their thoughts and understanding with confidence and ease. The Infants, when asked why this reading might be one of the readings under the value of Respect, had no difficulty in expressing the fact that to learn, you need to listen. Listening is a sign of respect. If we have no respect, it is difficult to listen and therefore difficult to learn.

We are eagerly looking forward to showcasing our school on Sunday 23rd May at our Open Day. A reminder that this is a compulsory day for students and due to this, as usual, Monday 24th May is a pupil-free day.
It will be a smaller performance this year due to the restrictions that were placed on our singing program over the past year. However, there are some new attractions and performances, as well as many of the regular favourites for our community to experience and enjoy. Open Day is an opportunity to celebrate what makes this school truly special with our families and friends. It is also wonderful to welcome visitors from our wider community, so please feel free to invite neighbours and family friends. Given that we could not hold this event last year we are expecting a big turnout!

The Power of the Pause in Promoting Productivity and Purpose
Om Paramatmane Nama…
These words might sound a bit foreign, but to the John Colet School community, this little phrase represents a big part of their daily life. Throughout the day, students and staff Pause for at least five seconds before starting a new activity. The result? A more grounded, more present and more attentive approach to their learnings, and life.
This practice of mindfulness is not a new concept – perhaps you already incorporate an element of it in your life at home, or at work? But it’s something that John Colet School embedded in their values since the school’s inception over 35 years ago.
Headmaster Julian Wilcock says the school’s unique Pause philosophy continues to garner positive feedback from parents, high school teachers, and the children themselves, who value learning about self-awareness from an early age.
“We know that attention is a learned skill, and have found that this simple act of

From our Deputy Head of School
Welcome to Term 2. It has been wonderful to see the children return to school with so much energy and enthusiasm. On Monday, the teachers met as they always do, to prepare for the term ahead. Part of this day is always devoted to study related to the ethos of the school. We spent some time together revisiting the principles on the which the school was founded. These are shown below.
To give the children information related to:
the simple principles of spiritual knowledge,
knowledge of the universe,
man, and
the individual’s relation thereto
in the belief that the child really knows, and, if the information is given simply and accurately enough, it will connect with that inner knowledge and make it available to the child.
It is very valuable to continually refresh our knowledge and understanding of these principles to ensure that we stay true to the type of education that we aim to provide at

This week we held our ANZAC commemoration at John Colet School. A special thank you to our guest speaker this year, past president of Forestville RSL, Mr John Scifleet, and special guests Mr Jason Falinski MP, and JCS Board Member Mr James Donald, along with parent attendees. As our Value in focus this term is Respect, this was a good opportunity for our students to appreciate the sacrifice that has been made and continues to be made for our community. The children were able to pay their respects to all people who have made a sacrifice. In the words from Kemal Ataturk’s Tribute: “There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side in this country of ours”. It is an occasion for people to unify towards peace for all.
All students showed outstanding respect both during the ceremony as well as during
