Sanskrit Recitation Finals: winners announced

Congratulations to all our students for taking part in this year’s Sanskrit Recititation Competition.  At the finals this week, beautiful, clear diction was on display, with each student conveying the meaning and emotion of the recitation pieces through voice and intonation.  Our judge this year was Mrs Sarah Mane.

JCS student wins National Chinese Eisteddfod

Congratulations to Lucia C (5T) who has won the title of the 2019 National Champion at the recent National Chinese Eisteddfod.
The National Chinese Eisteddfod is an annual event organised by the Chinese Language Educational Council of NSW. It is a poem or prose recital competition for students of Chinese background or non-Chinese background. It is an opportunity for students who study Chinese to use and practise the language in a formal competitive setting.
Lucia recited the traditional Chinese poem, “Hurry” (匆匆) written by Zhu Ziqing (朱自清). Her confident and well executed delivery won her this fabulous award. Huge congratulations to Lucia for her hard work and dedication.
Lucia is a talented linguist who last year won her age group in John Colet School’s annual Sanskrit Recitation Competition.

Diverse talents on display at assemblies

A recent school assembly epitomised the breadth of talent within our student body, when a variety of awards were given out for school activities….
Earlier this year, John Colet School participated in the Australia My Country competition run annually by the Forestville RSL Sub Branch.  This year the theme was “Coming Home” and 350 primary school children entered from 21 local schools across 3 categories and 2 age groups. John Colet School entrants did very well in the Australia My Country competition run annually by the Forestville RSL, winning 4 of the 20 prizes. 11am –  See a  Fencing demonstration by students on the main stage.

Choose your favourite cake in our Cake Baking and Decorating Competition on the upstairs verandah.  Bid in the silent auction to take a great cake home.

Buy books at our Book Fair in the Library.
Tour as many classrooms as you can!
Play games of skill and daring with 6th class at their games stalls.  Bring lots of gold coins to pay them!!
Get a free photobooth picture taken with your friends (or your Mum and Dad!)

Thai style vegetable curry, another of Chef's recipes!

Paste
1 tub May poi yellow curry paste
100mls sweet chili sauce
1 bunch Thai basil
1 bunch Vietnamese mint
1 bunch coriander
8 cloves garlic
1 bulb of ginger (peeled)
2-4 long red chillies (depending on hot you would like it)
(The paste will last up to 3 months in a sealed container in the fridge please note if the use by date on the paste is a shorter time this will affect the length of time you can keep the paste)
Curry for family of 4
1-2 diced brown onions
2 grated cloves of garlic
400g diced butternut squash
1-2 small tins of chick peas
100g green beans, broccoli or snow peas for colour)
300ml Coconut milk (recommend the Kara UHT)
2-4 TBS curry paste above (or more if you like a hotter curry)
2 TBS Veg oil
50ml soy sauce
(Always taste the curry paste before adding to food as a lot can affect the heat of the paste like the chillies, garlic and Asian

3rd class explore Aboriginal culture

On Wednesday, 3rd Grade went to Kuring-Gai National Park to get some fantastic facts about Aboriginal Culture. By Kristof
A short time after we arrived and started our walk, the first thing I saw was a fox trapping sign. I was sad because foxes are my favourite animals. By Mikayla
At the National Park we walked through a wet bush track that looked like a desert. Laurie was guiding us then we watched him make some ochre. Since we had ochre, we painted ourselves. Meanwhile, other people were making red or brown coloured ochre. By Aaron

Our report on the Northern Beaches Chess Tournament

On the 18th March, the John Colet Senior Chess Team competed at their first tournament of the year. The tournament was the Northern Beaches Chess Tournament which was held at Mona Vale Public School. We had a very successful day and for many students it was their first chess tournament. Here are our results: John Colet F – Connor, Sofia and Winston – 1st Place in the Junior DivisionJohn Colet C – Katia, Ella and Jasmine – 1st Place in the Girls’ DivisionJohn Colet A – Leo, Siddhartha and Marlon – 3rd place overall Congratulations to everybody involved.

'Fighting' and 'funny' skills for our drama club

Two specialist acting coaches will be giving workshops with our Shakespeare Drama Club in the last two weeks of term, assisting our drama teacher Zoe Emanuel.Chris Tomkinson from Sport for Jove (he heads up the Education Department and is also an actor for their touring Shakespeare troupe)  will help refine fight skills and choreograph the street fighting scene for our Romeo and Juliet drama group.Nick O’Regan, who works as a writer, actor and puppeteer specializing in masked performance and physical comedy, will lead a Commedia d’ell Arte workshop to help with Physical Movement for Comedy for our Midsummer Night’s Dream drama club group. Our drama club students will be performing in the Northern Beaches Eisteddfod and the Sydney Eisteddfod in May and June this year.Miss Emanuel is also organising other drama incursions for the wider school community.
