On Monday we will be celebrating Nowruz. This is an ancient custom held throughout Central, Western and South Asia and in and around the Black Sea basin, to celebrate the new year. The children in each year have all made something which will be placed on a table called the Haftseen table. For example, our L1st children have been growing seeds to represent new life while our 6th class children have been producing calligraphy. Everything that goes on the table has particular significance. This is an opportunity for the children to embrace different cultures and acknowledge what is common to all humanity.

Shakespeare tips and links for learning lines at home
There are many ways to assist your child at home as we begin preparations for your child’s annual class play.
Rule number 1: Let it be a fun experience!
Rule number 2: Slow and clear articulation is crucial.
Rule number 3: Repetition makes perfect.
Rule number 4: Remember this is a team effort because every part is important!
Here are some tips for your adventures with Shakespeare this year:
Hand-write or print out memory cards to assist with memorising
Record the lines as an audio file and play these repeatedly in the car and at home for your child to recite along with.

Deputy Head of School’s Comment
Next week, the children will be attending Cyber Safety Workshops at school, and we are hoping that as many parents as possible will register for the Wednesday evening webinar. As screens become more and more part of our lives, we need to ensure that the children know how to be responsible digital users. While digital devices may help support the children’s education it is our firm belief that nothing can replace the conscious connection between a child and their teacher.

Head of School’s Comment
At next week’s assembly, we shall be introducing our 6th Class Leaders to the students. They may already know our Head Boy and Girl, Our Head Chorister and Art Prefect, however, what they may not know is that every 6th Class student has a role to play, and an opportunity to serve. This list includes monitors for Art, Library, Shakespeare and IT, as well as positions as Handymen/women and Gardeners.
Leadership roles for our senior students gives them profound opportunities to interact and model for our younger students, build confidence, and develop skills that will serve them well in their next educational journey. This year 6th Class will also have the opportunity to attend an overnight leadership camp in March.

Deputy Head of School’s Comment
It has been an excellent start to the term. The children have come back bright and ready to engage with their learning. It is very encouraging to see how keen our 6th class students are to take up their responsibilities as leaders of the School. It is clear that they value service and are willing and able to put it into practice. On Thursday they had the opportunity to meet their new Lower 1st buddies. This is something that they all look forward to and it is a relationship all the children come to cherish.

Head of School’s Comment
The School Value that we are exploring this Term is Service. Service is the cornerstone of our School and wider community, and the continued success of our School is in no small part due to the positive contribution and support of our parent community. This is particularly the case with regard to the position of Class Parent. Teachers will be looking to appoint at least one core representative for their class and I urge you to get in touch with them. It would be particularly good to see some dads in the roles this year.
The role of the Class Parent is one of communication and coordination and should not be onerous. They will require many helpers during the year with the many events and celebrations that enrich our school. I do urge you to give them all the support you can and offer help when it is required. 2023 Year in Review by 6th Class
This year has given us many opportunities. From Luna New Year to graduating, Year 6 has been a great experience.
On Monday 30th of January, we started our last year at John Colet. We kicked off the year with adorable faces by helping our Lower 1st buddies through their first days at school. We then celebrated Luna New Year where 6th Class got to dress up in big dragon costumes and parade around the Garigal while playing traditional Chinese drums. Our next big thing went swimmingly. Guessed it? The Swimming Carnival, where everyone from 3rd to 6th Class participated in swimming. At the end of the month, we had Cook House Charity Day.
Our next event was the public speaking finals. Then came the Easter service, Anzac Day service and then the Walkathon which we got to enjoy with our buddies. And finally, we conclude our last Term 1 at John Colet on the 6th of
