The children were so excited to participate in the Shakespeare workshop on Monday. Joanna E, Violet’s mum, facilitated an action-packed session with many activities to build the children’s confidence, acting skills and ability to use Shakespearean language. We also looked at the plot and characters of Romeo and Juliet and discussed themes, including Shakespeare’s use of antithesis. The children had so much fun and developed a deeper understanding of our play. Thank you, Joanna!
In English this week, we practised reading fluency with our text, Storm Boy. We focused on the setting of the story and identified strong verbs and powerful adjectives used by the author. We also read a description of a storm and reflected on the way the text made us feel . We discussed the writer’s ability to engage the reader’s senses and even make the storm seem as though it is a character. In Maths we worked

Deputy Head of School’s Comment
On Thursday Lower 1st celebrated 100 days at school. It is quite extraordinary to reflect on how much development and learning has taken place in this relatively short period of time. The children show steadiness, focus and independence and have embraced both the School Values and the Pause very naturally. Their ability to sit quietly in events is commendable and was beautifully demonstrated in our Teacher’s Day Assembly this week. This is no small feat for 5- and 6-year-olds. Equally, they are confident and enthusiastic participants when required. Thursday was a wonderful opportunity for the children to celebrate this milestone with the rest of the school.

Head of School’s Comment
Next week, our 5th and 6th Class students head to Canberra and 3rd and 4th Class students will travel to the slightly warmer area of Lake Macquarie for their camp. Our older students have previous experience being away from home, however, for many of our 3rd Class students, this will be the longest time they have been away from their parents. There will be some natural nervousness to work through, yet it is a wonderful opportunity to meet this challenge in a safe and fun environment and develop independence and resilience.

From our Deputy Head of School
On Monday we will be celebrating Nowruz. This is an ancient custom held throughout Central, Western and South Asia and in and around the Black Sea basin, to celebrate the new year. The children in each year have all made something which will be placed on a table called the Haftseen table. For example, our L1st children have been growing seeds to represent new life while our 6th class children have been producing calligraphy. Everything that goes on the table has particular significance. This is an opportunity for the children to embrace different cultures and acknowledge what is common to all humanity.
