This week we were delighted to hear the news that a group artwork by Year 4 students was selected as one of the 100 finalists from over 5,000 entries in the Wild at Art Threatened Species Art Competition.
The organisers said: “Your class’s skills and dedication have truly shone through, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them as part of the finalist group. Their artwork not only showcases their artistic skills but also highlights their commitment to raising awareness about the conservation of Australia’s unique threatened species.”

Deputy Head of School’s Comment

This week we have enjoyed three wonderful sporting events at John Colet. Last Sunday 110 people from joined in the Beach2Beach fun run. This has been the biggest team to date. On Monday we had a fantastic day at our annual Athletics Carnival. There were many parents who joined in the for the day. Finally on Wednesday we had 32 of our primary students representing John Colet at the IPSHA sports carnival. A big week in Athletics

We had another fantastic turnout for the Beach2Beach Fun Run this year, with our JCS Team having 110 participants, making us the second-largest team after Stella Maris College! The weather was glorious, and everyone enjoyed the event, whether they chose to walk or run the 3k, 6k, or 13k distance. It was a wonderful day of fun and community spirit! A big thank you to parents James D and Maraya B for volunteering and helping out at the stand.
We had an amazing day at the Athletics Carnival the following day at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Rec! The sun was shining, and there was a gentle breeze, making it the perfect day for some fantastic sporting fun. This week in 4N

In English this week we reviewed last week’s descriptions of setting and edited them. We continued reading Storm Boy and discussed vocabulary. Next week we will look at Characterisation and how writers invite emotional engagement with literature. In Maths we reviewed 2D shapes and their properties before investigating tessellations. We also looked at how we can use shapes together to make different ones. Next week we will look at the transformation of shapes (translation, rotation, reflection) and tessellations. We continued our Geography unit by discussing the meaning of sustainability and reading about cities around the world that are reducing the use of cars. In Science, we consolidated our understanding of natural and processed materials. As part of our unit on World Faiths, we began looking at the Golden Rule – a common thread expressed in different ways in all religions.

From the Head of School

We look forward to bringing our community together for our Athletics Carnival on Monday. Conditions will be different this year due to some renovations being undertaken by the Sports Academy, however, it is sure to be a fun day. We also hope to see as many mums and dads as last year in our parent race. Don’t forget to bring your running shoes and have a stretch before!

Species Survival Science Week

We have had a great week in Third Class and the children have enjoyed some special activities for Science Week. The theme this year is ‘Species Survival – More than just sustainability’.
The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
We started our Science Week with a live webinar about species survival. Through the week we have explored the biodiversity in Australia and looked at what science can do to
protect endangered species. Also in class we have continued our unit on heat energy considering how heat travels between objections (conduction) flowing from
hotter to colder things. We conducted an investigation into how heat travels through different materials and noted that some materials are better conductors of heat.

Learning about the use of dialect in an Australian classic

In English last week 4th Class continued reading Storm Boy. They discussed the dialect known as Aboriginal English used by one of the characters of Aboriginal heritage, Fingerbone Bill. This is a form of English governed by a unique set of rules and is spoken by a large proportion of First Nation people in Australia. They also continued to analyse the language devices used in descriptions of settings. This week children will use these language devices to write their own descriptions. In Maths, they inished Position by looking at the amount of turn (degrees) between compass points and describing a return journey on a grid map. In Geography, the students continued exploring natural resources provided by the environment and how they help us. In Philosophy, they started a scripture unit called World Faiths in which they will discuss common threads amongst religions.
Last week the children participated in an online ESafety

Head of School’s Comment

We are continuing with our exploration of our Value of Stillness this Term.
Our practice of mindfulness and pausing throughout the day, allows the children a regular opportunity to focus, become still and centre themselves within the present. Students practice letting go of thoughts and emotions tied up with the past, while also releasing considerations or judgements of the future.
The ultimate aim is that focus does not always require a pause, however, becomes a regular practice at whatever task is before us. Holding oneself within the present is not easy and can be fleeting as our minds quickly become distracted and busy. Like a muscle working on a new activity or task, it takes practice over time for this to feel more natural. At school, we take a developmental approach to this, whereby the children begin with small steps leading towards more sustained periods of attention.
